The three tiers of shower glass explained in plain English — cost, cleaning, looks, and which one fits your bathroom and budget.
Shower doors come in three tiers, and the names get thrown around loosely. Here is what each one actually is, and how to pick.
Framed
Thinner glass (usually 1/4") supported by aluminum framing on every edge. It is the budget option and it works — but the metal channels trap water and grime, the look dates a bathroom, and in our humid Southwest Florida climate the frames corrode faster than most people expect.
Semi-frameless
A hybrid: framing around the perimeter of the enclosure, but the door itself is frameless glass. You get a cleaner look than full framing for less than full frameless. It is a sensible middle step for rentals and secondary baths.
Frameless
Heavy 3/8" or 1/2" tempered glass held by minimal hardware — hinges and clips, no metal channels at all. It is the premium tier: the most open look, the easiest to clean, and the finish buyers read as luxury in a Naples or Bonita Springs listing.
The quick comparison
- Budget-first, short-term → framed
- Cleaner look on a working budget → semi-frameless
- Primary bath, remodel, or resale play → frameless
What we recommend most
For primary bathrooms in SWFL we install frameless more than everything else combined — the easy-clean factor in hard-water country plus the resale appeal usually justifies the difference. For a guest bath over a tub, a semi-frameless slider can be the smart-value pick.
